Perfect Storm hits Marmot Basin
December 2007
Skiers and Boarders Revel in Powder Snow and Warm Temperatures
JASPER – The recent storm that swept through western Canada has deposited over 25 cm of new snow at Marmot Basin ski resort in Jasper National Park allowing the area to open more runs, more lifts and satisfy the hunger of the most avid powder seekers. “It could not have come at a better time”, says Brian Rode, Marmot’s VP of marketing. “We opened this season on November 10 to ski race teams, our earliest opening ever, and, although the conditions have been quite good up to now, this new snow is the icing on the cake that we have all been waiting for”.
Skiers and boarders have also been enjoying warm temperatures at Marmot Basin ever since the new snow fell. A common weather phenomenon for Jasper, known as a temperature inversion, brought a balmy high of -1C to the mountain yesterday and the temperature at 8:00 am today was -4C at Marmot. A temperature inversion occurs when warm air rises to the higher elevations and colder air is trapped in the bottom of the valley.
The famous Knob Chair opened today and Marmot now has 60 runs open representing approximately 85% of the total terrain.
