The country has an excellent network of multi-lane highways, which will get you between towns and cities quickly. However, to get to know the real Canada, you need to get off the highway and onto the slower country roads. Here you will find the most scenic drives in the country. You’ll also find that Canadian drivers are extremely courteous which will make your driving adventure even more enjoyable.

Some thing you need to know before you go:

• Australians need a valid driver’s licence, but do not need an international driver’s licence.
• All road signs, speed limits and odometers are in kilometres.
• Speed limits: 
   - 100km/h on major highways
   - 80km/h on rural highways
   - 50km/h in built up areas
  However, always be careful to check the speed limit signs, as Canadian traffic police are strict on speeding!
•  Wearing seatbelts is compulsory for all passengers.
• You can turn right on a red light if there is no traffic from the left (except in Quebec).
• You need to be aware of wildlife on the roads – large animals such as bears, moose and dear can stray onto roads. Although they can appear at any time, extra caution should be taken during summer between dawn and dusk.
• Beware of gravel shoulders on country roads.
• Finally, and most importantly, Canadians drive on the right hand side of the road!
